Bhai Mani Singh Ji is one of the most revered figures in Sikh history. He was a scholar, a warrior, and a devoted Sikh who served the Guru with unwavering faith. His life is a testament to courage, wisdom, and sacrifice. Bhai Mani Singh Ji was born in 1644 in the village of Alipur, in present-day Pakistan. His family was deeply devoted to the Sikh faith. His grandfather, Bhai Blue Rai Ji, had attained martyrdom during the time of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. This legacy of sacrifice shaped Bhai Mani Singh Ji's life from an early age. He served as the Diwan (custodian) of Sri Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Under his guidance, the management and rituals of the shrine were aligned with Gurmat principles. He established discipline and order in the sacred premises. Bhai Mani Singh Ji is widely recognized for compiling the Dasam Granth, the writings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He also wrote the Bhai Mani Singh Ji Janam Sakhi, a historical account of the life of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His contributions to Sikh literature are invaluable. One of the most significant events in his life was the convening of the Sarbatt Khalsa at Amritsar on Diwali. When the Governor of Punjab, Zakaria Khan, imposed a tax of ten thousand rupees on the gathering, Bhai Mani Singh Ji refused to pay. He was arrested and taken to Lahore. Despite being offered wealth and a high position in exchange for converting to Islam, he remained steadfast. He was subjected to brutal torture and was executed by being cut limb by limb. He accepted martyrdom with a smile, refusing to abandon his faith. His martyrdom stands as a symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment to Sikh values. He proved that the spirit of faith cannot be crushed by physical torture. Bhai Mani Singh Ji's legacy continues to inspire Sikhs around the world. His life teaches us that standing for truth and righteousness is the highest duty of a human being. "Jau tau prem khelan ka chau, sir dhar tali gali meri aau." — Guru Nanak Dev Ji
